Marketing, simplified. in conversation with Moving Minds founders Kathryn and Lou Hughes

Moving Minds founders Kathryn and Lou Hughes

Navigating the ever-increasingly complex world of marketing, with the proliferation of new channels like Clubhouse and TikTok to the convergence of new technologies, can be daunting.

But its importance is undeniable – now, more than ever, you need to be able to make an impact from afar (at least six feet, people!)

The good news is that I’m about to introduce you to – and you can quote me on this – the answer to all of your growth challenges.

Meet Kathryn and Lou Hughes, the owners of Moving Minds based in West Palm Beach.

The two founders are former Chief Marketing Officers who have worked for several Fortune 500 companies, including Caremark, Fannie Mae, CoStar, TLC Laser Eye Centers, and HealthSouth, before founding their agency.

Ever refilled a CVS prescription online?

You can thank Lou for that.

Heard of Schweiger Dermatology? In overhauling everything from their website to their call center, the fastest-growing dermatology company in the United States increased its revenues by 303% with the help of Moving Minds.

Now 15 years in business with a worldwide team, Lou and Kathryn work closely with a handful of private equity and venture capital companies across many industries, including healthcare, digital services, high tech, and financial services.

Whereas many marketing agencies are highly specialized, Moving Minds is genuinely an integrated, multi-channel, one-stop-shop.

They’re the growth experts, so I’ll let them take it from here.

TSG: Tell me about how you got started.

MM: We use the phrase ‘Marketing is more complex than ever; we make it less so’ to describe the many existing and emerging channels that businesses have to reach customers and the convergence of new technologies. We help companies navigate this complexity to drive their growth – rapidly.

As former CMOs, we wanted to create the type of marketing agency that we had never worked with before; a true partner that can create an intelligent growth strategy and execute an integrated plan faster and smarter using fractional teams of marketing experts.

By outsourcing their entire marketing operations, our global clients don’t need to incur the cost and time to build internal teams. We like to say, ‘grow your pipeline, not your headcount.’

So rather than working with five different agencies, they can hire us as a single source.

We oversee all of their marketing investments based on a comprehensive marketing strategy and develop the day-to-day roadmap for companies to meet their customer acquisition and revenue targets.

And as their singular partner for driving their growth, we are solely accountable for the results.

TSG: I’m new here. Can you explain what it is you really do?

MM: We give customers the ability to run multi-channel programs using a fraction of the resources.

So what we do is build marketing organizations for ‘forward-thinking’ organizations who need to get to market quickly, and they don’t have the resources to hire full-time headcount.

Our work often begins with building the proper foundation and removing impediments in scaling their growth.

First, we evaluate and address a client’s ‘blocking and tackling’ – their branding, positioning, media mix, marketing channels, data, systems, and even their business processes. We help them tweak all of these areas such that once they’re optimized, we can then layer on robust multi-channel programs.

Some of our clients already have marketing leadership but need an agency partner to drive their day-to-day marketing campaigns. But most often, with a new venture and start-up, we will serve on their executive team as a fractional chief marketing officer.

TSG: How big is your team?

MM: We have 35 people worldwide – from designers, web developers, and content strategists to social media gurus, search engine marketing experts, and digital advertising specialists. Our goal, and the reason for us relocating Moving Minds to West Palm Beach, is to double in size over the next two years.

Our team has been together for the past 12-15 years, and many of our clients have too.

We have been virtual since before virtual was cool. We were a pioneer in creating the ‘gig’ economy ten years before ‘gig’ became mainstream.

TSG: With so many options out there, what sets you apart?

MM: Generally, it takes 6-9 months to build out the full marketing team, and it’s expensive to hire the headcount to run integrated multi-channel campaigns.

The value we bring to our clients is we bring an entire team of marketing experts with proven experience to power up a client’s growth initiatives in a matter of days, not months.

We have the people, the systems, the partners, and the relationships to do so.

Everything we do for our clients is unique to them. There is nothing cookie-cutter about what we do. Every client has unique challenges, and every strategy and the marketing channels that we may use to help them grow may be very different.

Kathryn and I are actively engaged throughout the entire client relationship. There is no B Team; our clients deserve the most experienced and knowledgeable people working with them every day.

The world is so competitive, and speed is so critical.
